HALL OF FAME
2025 INDUCTEES

When you break down the history of the Archbishop Rummel wrestling program, two facts ring true: #1, There’s a long list of Rummel Wrestling legends…. #2, Scott Gibbons is at the very top of that list. He is the most accomplished wrestler in Raider history. Gibbons closed out a remarkable career on the mat for The Raiders with 3 consecutive state championships. He competed, as a freshman, in the 140 lb division and took 5th in the State Tournament. He never lost another match in the state tournament over the next 3 years. This includes State Championships in the 160 lb, 171, lb, and 195 lb divisions from 2010-2012. Gibbons boasts a career record of 203-25, with 15 of those losses coming during his 53 win freshman campaign. He only had one loss as a senior (40-1) and never lost an in-state match during his junior or senior seasons. Like many Raider grapplers before him, Gibbons took his talents to the national stage. He reached the finals at the "Beast of the East" tournament on the campus of the University of Delaware. He was a seven time All-American including a runner-up finish at Folkstyle Nationals. Gibbons placed three times in the prestigious USA Wrestling Freestyle and Greco Roman Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota. Widely regarded as the crown jewel of high school wrestling, the tournament is a proving ground for future collegiate standouts and Olympians. Gibbons not only rose to the challenge, he made history and captured a Fargo national title in 2010, becoming the only wrestler in Louisiana history to do so. Gibbons led the 2011 Raider Wrestling team to the school’s first outright District and State Championships. As a Raider, he was a 3-time State Champion, 3-time All Metro team member, and received the 2012 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. When his days as a Raider came to a close in 2012, Gibbons was just getting started. His excellence on the mat AND in the classroom earned him a scholarship to the Ivy League’s Princeton University. There, Gibbons racked up more trophies including the following: EIWA Conference placer and Gifford trophy winner, given to the Princeton wrestler who scored the most points in a season. Gibbons credits his days as a Rummel Raider as the breeding ground for his many successes, both on and off the mat, adding, “I got recruited to Princeton University because of the great training and education I got here at Rummel. It set the path for the rest of my life. I’m still best friends with my teammates and have been in their weddings. We were a tightknit group, and we still talk to our coaches. I’ll never be able to say it enough, but I’ll say it as much as I can…’Thank you Rummel wrestling. Go Raiders!”

If you attended Archbishop Rummel football games anytime from 2007 through 2009, it did not take you long to figure out who Carvin Johnson was. The heralded Raider safety had a penchant for taking over games at crunch time. He did so as both a defender and a return man. This was highlighted by his 64 yard game-winning punt return for a touchdown vs district rival Jesuit in the 2009 playoffs. That win helped catapult the Raiders to their first ever football State Championship appearance. Johnson embodied a what true playmaker is, as evidenced by his 13 career interceptions as a Raider. He always seemed to step up when it mattered most. Carvin did not limit his athletic prowess to the gridiron, having spent 2 years in the Rummel baseball program. Football was where the future Michigan Wolverine would make his biggest impact. Johnson earned All-District honors as a junior, logging 3 interceptions as a safety. Like all good Raiders, he saved his best for last, garnering All-District, All-Metro, and All-State honors as a senior. He led the way with 80 tackles, 7 interceptions, and returned 2 punts for touchdowns for the 2009 Catholic League Champions who fell to West Monroe in the State Championship. Johnson's play was good enough to earn a scholarship to national power Michigan. After transferring from Michigan, he completed his career competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for Hampton University, where he received All-Conference recognition. As impressive as anything he did on the field, Johnson has faithfully and honorably served his country as a Fox 199th Forward Support Company Commander in the Louisiana National Guard. He also served as Forward Logistics Element OIC at Tower 22 in 2023-2024, providing all logistical support for forward troops in Syria and Iraq.

If there was a Mount Rushmore of catchers in the storied history of the Archbishop Rummel baseball program, Matt Liuzza would most certainly be on it. This Raider Alum is one of only 3 players in school history to play on four consecutive Catholic League Championship teams as the Raiders took consecutive district titles from 1999-2002. Liuzza closed the book on his stellar Raider career with a very impressive .403 batting average, 27 homeruns, and a whopping 163 RBI. He capped his 2001 junior season by earning the 5A State MVP and Catholic League MVP honors while posting a .419 batting average to go along with 12 HRs and 52 RBI. His sophomore campaign was a sign of things to come for Liuzza as his .415 batting average, 8 HRs, and 55 RBI netted him All-District, All-Metro, and All-State designations as he led the Raiders to a Louisiana 5A State Runner-up finish. His senior season included a 2 HR game vs Barbe in the State semi-final matchup. The impressive performance was preceded by his game-winning, bases clearing triple in the win over Baton Rouge power Tara High School in the quarterfinal contest. He completed that season with a .352 batting average, 7 HRs and 45 RBI. In his four years as a Raider, Liuzza and his teammates finished with a sparkling 8-0 record vs Catholic League rival Jesuit. The final tally of Liuzza’s accolades include the following: 2000-2002 All District team, 2001 All District MVP, 2000-2002 All Metro, 2001 All Metro MVP, 2000-2002 All State, 2001 All State MVP, 2000 and 2001 Legion All District, All State teams, 2001 Clarion Heralds Baseball All Elite Team MVP, and the Nokia Sugar Bowl Amateur Athlete in 2001 While his career as a Raider came to an end in 2002, Liuzza was just getting started as he signed a baseball scholarship with the mighty LSU Tigers, where he set a record for the most starts ever by a Tiger catcher at 212 games. When his playing days in Baton Rouge came to a close, he had to add another wing to his trophy case. His commendations as an LSU Tiger include the following: LSU-2003 and 2004 All Louisiana Team, 2003 and 2004 NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team, 2003 2nd Team SEC All Freshman Team, 4x SEC Player of the Week, 2005 Pre-Season All American, in 2008 inducted into All Alex Box Baseball Team Liuzza was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 29th round following his junior season and again in the 19th round by the Toronto Blue Jays following his senior year. He was twice named to the Mid-Season minor league All-Star team as professional.

Nathan Southard most certainly made his mark in the annals of the Archbishop Rummel Baseball program during his days on Severn Avenue. He entered as a highly touted shortstop but offered to play anywhere Coach Frank Cazeaux needed him. He landed in the outfield and never left, making the spot his home for a Raider baseball program that won 85% of their games during his 4 year run. Like his fellow inductee, Matt Liuzza, Southard is one of only 3 Raiders to win four consecutive Catholic League championships. The smooth hitting Raider was as good in the field as he was at the plate for the Raiders. Nathan posted a career .350 batting average on his way to making the All-District team as a sophomore, junior, and senior. His 2002 team reached a #4 National ranking along the way. Additional honors include the following: Academic All-State honorable mention 2002 Two-time All-East Jefferson team 2001 and 2002 All-Academic District award 2002 Selected to the Louisiana High School Coaches Association All-Star team 2002 Clarion Herald Elite baseball team 2002 Raiders’ Digest “Best Role Model” 2002 Southard’s post Rummel accomplishments include the following: Academic scholarship to Tulane, conference champion, all conference, All-American, all-star selection, draft pick, etc.) A member of Tulane's last team to reach the College World Series in 2005. Finished career with a .321 batting average with 29 home runs, 168 RBI, 50 stolen bases and 277 hits. Ranks in the top 10 of 10 career categories. Ranks in the top 10 of 10 single season categories. Tied a school record with three home runs against Houston, becoming only the second player in conference history to achieve this feat. 2005 Conference USA tournament MVP Second player in Tulane history to earn three straight NCAA Regional All-Tournament honors. Drafted in the 17th round by the St. Louis Cardinals and played three years in their minor league system before embarking on his professional business career.
